      Sinister Cinema has been a good resource for old, obscure films for many years. They sell DVD-Rs, so most of their products aren't what you would expect from remastered DVDs or Blu-rays. SC is literally a Mom & Pop enterprise. They do what they love and provide excellent service. I hope you'll check out what they have to offer. Thanks for tuning in!

    Hi Mike. A fascinating haul. The only ones I have are the Hammer documentary Flesh and Blood, and Phantom Ship (an early Hammer release). Tod Slaughter is definitely an interesting character and I’d very much like to get the set that has been put out by Indicator, which is beautifully packaged. The only one of his I have seen so far is The Crimes of Stephen Hawke. Interesting about Strangers and Black Noon, I see they are both on UA-cam so have added to the watchlist. Great stuff, Mike

    Hi Mike! Interesting haul. Thanks for the reminder on Mr. Peepers...I've wanted to check that show out.... I have a copy of Black Noon...it's probably not as good as yours if you say yours looks so good. Anything with Roy Thinnes for me, also Henry Silva, but the whole cast is interesting. It's been too long to remember what I think of that movie (the UA-cam copy looks good, by the way, so I may try it again). That Smoking collection reminds me of things we did in a quit-smoking program I was in, in the 80s (yes it worked!) . It's amazing how much of the early things made be famous actors have survived now on DVD. By the way, the captions on your video are sometimes hilariously off: "Dinah Shore"' somehow shows as "Lady dinosaur" 😂

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 22 години тому

      Well, if Dinah Shore came off as dinosaur, it might be the way I pronounced it on camera! That's funny! Seeing Roy Thinnes again made me realize that I haven't seen very much of his work, or at least I can't remember seeing him that often. But he's a very effective actor. Do is Henry Silva. Very unique individual. Smoking was never a big problem for me. My parents both smoked during all of my young life, so it was just normal and the house was filled with smoke. I tried it out as a teenager and really enjoyed it. But it never became a habit or an addiction. In my 20s, I smoked grass and also cigarettes occasionally, but it still never caught hold as an addiction. I have no idea why. My sister was hooked for most of her life. I guess I'm just fortunate. I admit that every once in a while, I imagine myself inhaling a Kool cigarette just for the taste. But I'll never do it. Too expensive and too much trouble.

    Cool shirt Mike! I'm aware of Mr. Peepers but I never saw it. Cool commercials. I love seeing the old stuff. I do not remember The naked Monster but I am intrigued. Jonathan Winters was the funniest! I used to see him back in the day when I used to do antique shows. Those year videos sound pretty good. Kind of like those cards they make where they show you everything that happened during those years. I would love to have The Man who Laughs! The official inspiration for the Joker. Bela Lugosi is an actor I would like to collect more. Good stuff as always Mike and a lot of new titles for me to discover. Take care Boomer!

      The Man Who Laughs was the inspiration for The Joker? I had no idea, but it does make perfect sense. That was a super fun video Mike, and I'm glad I'm not the only one that can geek out watching old commercials lol. The "Madmen" really did their job on those cigarette commercials, to this day I think I remember every jingle from every brand. Speaking of commercials I just watched a bunch of Donna Loren Dr. Pepper commercials. I've been a fan of her forever, I even remember when she was a guest on the MMC on her tenth birthday, which is on her official UA-cam channel as well. Off subject I watched the restored version of your favorite movie lol, The Incredibly Strange Creatures...Quite the upgrade from the DVD. You know by the time that movie was made The Pike in Long Beach was actually already on the decline. If you want to see it in more of it's glory watch Gorilla at Large from 1954 with future stars Cameron Mitchell, Anne Bancroft and Lee Marvin. Also Raymond Burr and Lee J. Cobb. It was also largely shot at The Pike. Once Disneyland opened in 1955 The Pike's days were pretty much numbered unfortunately.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 22 години тому

      Great comments! I love curling up on the couch and zoning off on old TV commercials, smoking and everything else. And I definitely remember the lovely Donna Loren in those Dr. Pepper ads and for her other work: Shindig, the Beach Party flicks, etc. She was a really talented, gorgeous young lady, and she's still active and making music. My fave flick, The Incredibly Strange Creatures, is one that I can rewatch a thousand times. The Pike was a fascinating place, and it was beautifully showcased in that movie. I've seen Gorilla At Large, but I didn't realize that was filmed on The Pike. I'll give that movie another look. Thanks!

    Hi Mike...a good choice, based on the incredible PR around this movie in 1999. I remember going to the theater and waiting in line (something I had not done since the 80s. It was also the day of JFK, Jr's tragic plane crash). The theater was packed when I finally got in...i agree with all you say except that the ending is 'nothing'....I find the image of the boy standing in a corner in that creepy house really haunting. I did not need to see a 'witch' (I think that term was just used for anything scary in the woods, not exactly a witch.....an evil force of some kind). To me, it's better not to see a 'witch' or monster at the end...it's left to my imagination. I still watch the movie, just last year I saw it again and I still enjoy the way it's made. For me, Avatar would be a very good choice for 'over-hyped' , boy did I NOT enjoy that one (3D Imax) 😉

      Hi Jay! And thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I have to admit that this video was meant to be as funny and snarky as I could make it. I decided to try ranting, sort of, for a change, and therefore put on a show for my audience. (I have an audience???) I do love this film, and all the well-executed hype that surrounded it. What a fascinating idea! Including the "documentary" that went along with the "found" footage! The ending did its job well, because it left us wanting more and raised so many questions about what exactly happened. The only detail that I still find strange is seeing the guy standing in the corner. I know that was a part of the legend concerning how the witch treated her victims. But it just seemed strange to me that with all of the movement and energy going on in that house, Mike would just be standing there like that. So, that image doesn't haunt me, but I think of it more as a WTF moment. Still, a great movie, with excellent, totally believable acting by all concerned. Thanks again for commenting!

    I believe that deciding what is a great (or not great) film is entirely up to the individual. Certainly one can be influenced by lists and critics, but just because someone or something tells me a movie is a "must-see" doesn't mean I feel like I have to see it. I'm all about thinking for yourself and coming to your own conclusions, especially when it comes to spending a large chunk of your life watching movies. By the way....."Mad Mad World" was one of Veronica Carlson's favorite movies!!

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 11 днів тому

      I agree that one's own personal taste and experience are the most important factors in deciding what is great or not so great. And you make a good point about the big chunks of time we invest in watching movies. I thought about that recently when I was reading a negative review of a new film written by a local critic. He lamented that time he had to spend watching a terrible film so that he could write about it and warn other people not to waste their time. That's a trade-off a professional has to make, but the rest of us don't have to. That explains why I walked out of It's a MMM World: I wasn't having a good time at the movies! But I realize, and respect, the fact that so many people love that movie, including your friend Veronica. And I do plan to give it another watch one of these days. Thanks for commenting, Dan.

    HI Mike! I think this like music and food etc, is subjective. All art is really. I've never been a fan of critics. Siskel and Ebert were not my cup of tea. Especially Ebert who would be so snooty about films then turn around and laud Russ Meyer as a great filmmaker. (Not that I don't like Russ Meyer, who-hoo!). BUt for me, critics mean very little. I understand your view of something like Gone with the Wind. I feel similar with A clockwork Orange. I acknowledge the good acting and I understand the message but not one of my favorite. I feel that way especially about modern films. Hated Logan even though everyone and there mother thought it was great. I feel the same way about Citizen Kane. Slowly over my lifetime I've been warming to it. But in the end I think it really is subjective. I think The Godfather is a great film but I also love Robot Monster. Go figure.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 11 днів тому

      Robot Monster is definitely a GREAT film!!! Now, I happen to agree with you regarding A Clockwork Orange. I hated it. Saw it once, and that's enough. Again, my own personal taste based on my personal experience. If others want to rave about it, they can go ahead. I do love Siskel & Ebert, but I don't always agree with them, and they could both get really nasty at times. But I enjoy their writing. All of us can only follow our own hearts and our own tastes in art. Thanks for commenting, Rob!!

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 11 днів тому

      Great question! I would start with the book I show in the video, Roger Ebert's Movie Home Companion, which has hundreds of film reviews, and articles about Black & White films, a glossary of movie terms and several articles about his favorite actors/actresses. Also, his four-volume series: Roger Ebert: The Great Movies. There is also a great book called Awake in the Dark: The Best of Roger Ebert. I was able to find several copies of his Movie Yearbooks for the years 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2013 at a used bookstore. I'm not sure how many volumes there are, but they're good resources. And finally, if you happen to like Martin Scorsese, I recommend Scorsese by Ebert, published in 2008, which has several articles about the director and his films and interviews that occurred over several years. I also have an autographed copy of his 1984 book A Kiss is Still a Kiss: Roger Ebert At the Movies. I live in his hometown, Champaign, Illinois, and he came back to promote the book at a local department store. It was nice to get to meet him, if only for an autograph. Good luck!

    Hi Mike! what's your Letterboxd username? I'm on there too (mackjay)....I think it's a good idea to watch a movie again, if you didn't like it, but others think highly of. I've changed my mind on lots of films. I do think KANE is a great film, for its artistic innovation and the power of its story as a portrait of a tragically lonely man. We all see different things in films. My best example of one that everyone worships is RAGING BULL, I've seen it three times and I just don't see the point of watching this horrible character who never changes. Also, THE SEVEN SAMURAI...I think it's dull and far too long. I do think THERE WILL BE BLOOD is a great film, similar to CITIZEN KANE in a way: a nobody who becomes powerful, but is lonely all his life. I find that a moving theme in a film.

Fascinating for many reasons, even though I'm not a boxing fan, but filled with unlikeable, unredeemable characters. I don't own a copy and have no desire to. My life, as it now stands, remains free of the samurai experience, and I fully intend to keep it that way. I have a nice Blu-ray copy of Kane that a friend sent to me, and I recently watched it at home for the first time. Before that, I'd only seen it in theaters and in a film class. I really do like it more with each viewing. Lately, I've been starting to rewatch some of the Kino releases I picked up during their many sales. I watched them all so fast, they tend to be kind of a blur. Have a great weekend, Jay!

The status, or view by consensus of the thing doesn't really interest me. I don't know if The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is considered a great movie or even a good one....all I know is that it makes me happy when I watch it every New Year's Eve. ☺ Thanks as always for sharing. -Carm

I do enjoy reading what film critics and scholars have to say, mainly because I like good writing, and I like being challenged. I always include the Godfather and Goodfellas in my top favorite films I have ever watched. I think it's just a world I would never be a part of, and those films let me see what life in the Mafia may be like and the consequences of it. My favorite films are ones where I lose track of time, if it's a 3 hour film and it doesn't feel like it, that's special.

      Goodfellas is a terrific movie, and I also like the Godfather films. I would say that once you've seen these Mafia movies, there's no reason to see any others, as these are probably the best. I agree with your point about movies with long running times. I watched a couple of Fellini films recently for the first time and they just went on and on with very little rhyme or reason. But I've also seen many 3 hour movies that I didn't want to end.

  • @bb5468
    @bb5468 13 днів тому

    First off I'm really not concerned about lists or what professional critics think. Second I would never call myself a cinephile although I think I do know a lot about film and film history. So as not to leave a thousand word comment I'll just say something very simple. I think you can break down what's great in two parts. What's great on a technical and innovation level is the first one. They can be great on that level while at the same time, at least for most viewers, be boring as hell. The Oscars, critics, and so called experts love these of course, but I don't feel compelled to love them too just to show how "knowledgeable" I am. Then there's the films that are great because they achieve the real purpose, they're just plain entertaining. Now of course there are plenty, and I mean plenty, of films that are great on both levels, but a so called B movie can be just as entertaining, some of my favorite films are B movies. So in the end I'll let the professional movie snobs fight it out as to the technical stuff, I just want to watch a movie and have a damn good time.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951 13 днів тому

      Your point about appreciating a film for its technical achievements describes how I feel about Gone With the Wind. The movie is gorgeous to look at and the burning of Atlanta is a truly spectacular sequence. I love the look of the film much more than the human story. On the other hand, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an amazing, innovative use of modern image technology that is used to promote a beautiful, meaningful story filled with lovable, heroic characters. Again, my personal observations. There are millions of people who love the characters in GWTW, so good for them. I can't say that a critic has ever changed my mind about a film, whether it's one I've liked or disliked. But I do admit to being influenced in my early film-fan days by reading about classic and cult films that I hadn't yet seen. For example, I read about Detour in Danny Peary's first Cult Movies book, and I was already in love with the movie by the time I got around to seeing it. Same with Carnival of Souls. On the other hand, I read about Last Year at Marienbad in one of the Medved brothers' snarky "worst films" books and was prepared to hate it as much as they did. When I finally saw it, I was totally fascinated it by it, much to my surprise. Live and learn...

    It’s quite an interesting topic. I don’t usually use a rating system myself. Outside of Letterboxd or any sort of site/app like it, I usually just look at a film and if it’s one I’ve watched quite a bit or one I’ve just seen, I’ll know if I enjoy it or not and can say why I liked or disliked a film. No Country for Old Men is definitely one I can understand not enjoying. It’s one I like, but I get why one wouldn’t enjoy it. I think There Will Be Blood is a better movie than No Country for Old Men, but that’s me. I love Star Wars and Jaws. To me those are films I would consider to be perfect films alongside Chinatown and many other films due to the storytelling, direction and characters, but I know there are people who aren’t into Star Wars or like Jaws. Be it the characters, the setting, the genre itself or whatever, some aren’t fond of Star Wars. Same can be applied to Jaws, though even people who aren’t fond of Jaws I’ve often heard that they like the three leads, which likely is due to the performances of Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. Everybody has different tastes in films, some like certain kinds of films, like specific genres, while others like a variety of films though maybe with something like comedy, there are some that are regarded at as classic films which are in the comedy genre, not be to one’s sense of humor. Could be a very well made film and all that, but if the humor isn’t for someone then that could be a big strike against a particular film. Obviously there are films we can grow to love as time goes on, be it that the film has grown on us or we matured after a certain amount of time, while other films we might have enjoyed when we first saw them, later on aren’t fond of them anymore for one reason or another. But it’s interesting to think about what is a great film and what the reasons are for one thinking a particular film is great. Great video Mike, I hope you’re doing well. Have a great night and take care!

      Great comments, Jared! Thanks for responding. I'm sure I've mentioned to you that I saw Star Wars on its initial release and really enjoyed it. I also saw the two sequels on initial release and enjoyed them both, but not as much as the original film. My interest in Star Wars kind of dissolved after that, so when the prequels came out, I wasn't interested. But I realize there are millions of fans like you who love these films. I'm not sure why I never got around to seeing Jaws when it was playing in theaters and everybody was raving about it. When I finally saw it maybe ten or fifteen years ago in a theater, I did enjoy it, but I didn't become a diehard fan, and I don't own a copy. In the end, it's all about personal taste and how a particular film affects you. Who knows? Maybe someday I'll give No Country For Old Men a third chance!

    Great topic of discussion. This is something I've been thinking about with both books and movies lately. What makes a book great; what makes a film great? Funny thing you mentioned "No Country For Old Men". Never seen it, but I just checked out the book from my local library. Unfortunately, I don't think there have been many "great" films over the past 20 years. Switching to digital over film and the over reliance on digital FX has hurt the quality of movies. Disney buying every IP on the planet hasn't helped things either. Are there any great directors left? I respect Chris Nolan's insistence on shooting on film, but his filmography is a mixed bag for me. I like his early films (The Prestige is amazing) but IMO Interstellar, Tenet & Oppenheimer suck. Dude has lost his touch. These are dark times for the arts and entertainment industry.
